Prada has always utilized nylon as its primary material. The brand's ’84 debut of Pocone in its bag-and-accessory line received worldwide praise. The material that is repurposed is the result of a partnership with Aquafil, an Italian textile yarn producer that produces Econyl fabric from recycled nylon waste that can be recycled over and over again without losing its quality. The Business of Fashion reports that the repurposed fabric is part of a larger initiative to shift Prada's entire collection from virgin nylon to Re:Nylon by 2021. In addition to the six new Re:Nylon bags, the line includes a pair of shoes and boots made of recycled ECONYL as well as various apparel items made of the same material.
Prada and National Geographic produced a series "What We Carry", the video series that showcases the revolutionary process used to create Re:Nylon bags.
